Chapter 58

“You surprised me.”

Leo shut the door and turned, startled to find Lune standing there unexpectedly.

“Have you been talking to Eiran all this time?”

“I suppose so.”

“O-oh…!”

Lune seemed ecstatic, pulling out a handkerchief to dab at his joyful tears.

“When was the last time she talked to someone for so long? I was so scared to hear how she struggled to make friends at school!”

Leo clicked his tongue, watching Lune’s emotional display.

“I know you’re busy with work, but you clearly care a lot about your granddaughter.”

“I wish I could care even more, but business keeps me occupied… My son and daughter-in-law also passed away in the accident, leaving their daughter without much attention.”

Lune, who smiled bitterly, laughed.

“I wanted to stir something up in her, but it seems she’s opened up to you more than I anticipated. Yes! I want to repay you! I’ll do whatever I can!”

“…Is it appropriate for a country’s president to make such a promise?”

“What’s the harm?”

‘This elf seems quite generous.’

“I won’t ask for much. I haven’t done anything extraordinary.”

“Ha! A young man who isn’t greedy and remains humble! I like it!”

Lune patted Leo on the shoulder.

“But I feel compelled to repay you, even if it’s just a small token of my appreciation. If you don’t desire anything, I’d like to offer you an item that might be of use. One more thing, Leo. In elven society, it’s impolite to decline gifts.”

“Then I’ll accept it gratefully.”

Lune beamed with happiness.

“Let’s head to the manor’s treasury.”

‘It’s like receiving a gift from a wealthy friend’s grandfather.’

Leo followed Lune, feeling slightly bewildered.

Lune guided Leo to the cellar of the manor, unlocking the magical door and leading him inside.

Befitting of the most esteemed elven family, the treasury was opulent and grand.

“Our family’s heirlooms, the keys to accessing the Hero’s Worlds of our ancestors, are not something I can give you… But one of these items should suffice as a gift.”

Lune chuckled, gesturing towards the magical items displayed in cases at the entrance of the treasury.

They were all remarkable pieces.

Leo admired each object in awe as he moved through the collection.

Then, he halted abruptly in front of a blue gem the size of a fist.

‘This is…’

“It was acquired by one of our ancestors a thousand years ago. It’s a gem imbued with fairy power. It’s precious, though its purpose remains unknown. Do you fancy it?” Lune inquired, a hint of puzzlement in his expression.

“It’s beautiful.”

“Yes. The sculpted fairy inside the gem is truly remarkable.”

Indeed, just as Lune had described—

Inside the jewel was a tiny fairy, eyes closed in slumber.

It seemed like she was in a deep sleep.

“I’d like to choose this one.”

Lune was taken aback by his decision.

“Are you sure? It’s quite valuable, but its purpose…”

“I’m sure. I really like this one.”

“If you say so.”

With a nod, Lune retrieved the gem’s box from the display case and handed it to Leo.

Leo accepted it, examining the box.

‘I’m positive. This isn’t an ordinary piece.’

Leo chuckled to himself.

‘This is a real fairy.’

***

Leo, back from the Ersar manor, sat down for dinner.

‘I might be able to form a contract with the fairy if I can unseal the gem.’

His mind buzzed with thoughts of contracting with a fairy.

After dinner, Harrid and Sena dropped by their inn to discuss the next day’s schedule.

“This is a reminder. As you know, school trips are part of your curriculum at Lumene.”

Harrid scanned his students attentively.

“I hope nobody here thinks they’re just here to have fun.”

Some faces soured at his words.

“Starting tomorrow, we’ll rise at 6. After eating breakfast and getting ready, we’ll head to the Fairy Forest at 7:30 for training.”

“Training?”

“We already train enough at school.”

Some students looked puzzled.

“I understand you all have training in your respective elective classes. But during this trip, I aim to address any shortcomings I’ve noticed. Since Fairy Forest houses monsters, it’ll provide practical training opportunities.”

“I see.”

“That makes sense.”

“And after morning training, we’ll be focusing on mission training in the afternoon.”

“Mission training?”

“Yes. You’ll be assisting the residents of Velkia.”

“I get it now.”

The energized students remained behind as Harrid called Leo and Nella aside.

“Keep an eye on the rest of the students, will you?”

“Of course.”

“Understood, Professor Harrid.”

With that, Harrid and Sena left the lodging.

“Nella, I’m feeling a bit tired. Mind if I go to sleep early tonight?”

“Hmm? Sure thing.”

Leo sought Nella’s understanding and headed upstairs to his room.

And Carr followed.

“Leo, hitting the hay early?”

“Yeah. Did you wanna hang out?”

Carr grinned, pulling something from his arms.

“Check this out. Elven honey wine,” Carr whispered. “In a situation like this, just one drink’s fine, right?”

Leo extended his hand, eyeing Carr’s sly offer.

“Nah, I’ll pass.”

“Huh?”

“You know booze is a no-go for the first and second-years, right?”

“Isn’t that a bit too strict? How’s a student supposed to live if they always follow the rules? Sometimes you gotta bend ’em a bit.”

Leo chuckled at Carr’s mischief.

“It’s only the first day of the trip, so let’s lay low. What if you get busted right out the gate? Let’s hold onto it till the last day, then we’ll enjoy it.”

Getting caught by Harrid with alcohol would be trouble.

Even before departure, Harrid assigned some students to check the belongings of their peers.

Carr was one of the students searched.

Leo avoided scrutiny, given Harrid’s trust in him.

“I get it. Tcht. We’ll save it for the last day, then?”

“Sounds good.”

With a disappointed glance, Carr handed off the honey wine.

From there, Leo headed straight to his room.

Taking out the gem gifted to him from Lune, he sent a taskforce of spirits to go do his bidding.

Squinting at the shining bauble, Leo pondered.

‘It’s sealed by the sorcery of the Fairy King.’

That was the reason the Ersar family likely didn’t realize its true significance, thinking it simply had some fairy power.

The sorcery of the Fairy King.

After the Age of Despair, the contractor of the Fairy King disappeared.

Thus, elves lost access to any opportunity to experience his sorcery, until eventually knowledge of his unique sorcery vanished from history.

‘The sorcery of the Fairy King is distinct from regular fairies’.’

Fairies’ sorcery was actually derived from the sorcery of the Fairy King.

‘It’s not for nothing that the Fairy King, Phoenix Lord, and Elder Pegasus are called the three strongest summons.’

Moreover, the power felt from the jewel was the power of someone very familiar to Leo.

‘It’s Sillyd’s Mana.’

He was a fairy tied to Luna that Leo had encountered often.

Despite the time that had passed, Sillyd still held the status of Fairy King.

‘Why’s this fairy sealed without their wings?’

Leo mulled over the sealed fairy.

If the Fairy King had sealed it there, there must be a reason.

But all Leo could surmise was that she was a criminal of some sort.

Perplexed, Leo released more spirits, probing the thing.

As if picking a lock.

Leo employed his spirits to unravel Sillyd’s sorcery.

Only Leo, knowledgeable about the Fairy King’s magic, could accomplish it.

And in a matter of minutes…

Whoosh!

Energy surged from the gem’s surface.

‘First stage done.’

Leo smirked at the unraveled magic circle that had emerged.

‘Unlocking the rest might be beyond my current abilities.’

Though he understood the context, Leo lacked the power to fully reverse the sorcery.

With a puzzled expression, Leo noticed his right hand glowing.

Examining his hand, a summoning inscription in fairy language appeared.

‘The Fairy King’s Pledge?’

A reward earned from the Hero’s World used for the entrance exam, the Fairy King’s Pledge, had resurfaced.

Whoosh!

The gem emitted a brilliant golden light.

“Ack!”

The intense light made Leo instinctively shut his eyes and step back.

When he reopened them, cracks adorned the gem’s surface.

“Did it break the seal?”

Crack!

The gem levitated, fragments falling away.

Fluttering!

The glassy exterior shattered like cracked marble.

The fairy within unfurled.

A young fairy boy, slightly younger than Leo, emerged with a surprised gasp.

Then, he opened his golden eyes, scanning his surroundings.

[Has Father finally unsealed me?]

The fairy, speaking in a mischievous tone, spotted Leo and folded his arms.

[Why’s a human here before me?]

“Who are you?”

[Me?]

The fairy chuckled at Leo’s query.

[Tcht. You’re a mere human. Asking about my identity? How quaint. But I’ll indulge you since I’m in a good mood after being unsealed. Brace yourself, you’ll be astonished by my identity.]

“What is it, then?”

[I would be the firstborn son of Sillyd, and the heir to the Fairy King.]

Kiran, sporting a serious expression, lifted his chin.

[Surprised, aren’t you? Understandable! You’re but a trifling human. Even the elves hesitated to acknowledge the existence of a Fairy King’s heir like me when they dared not acknowledge the Fairy King himself. Tcht.]

“Sillyd was quite polite to me. I’m surprised his son would be this cheeky?” Leo exclaimed before swatting Kiran as if shooing away a fly.

With a crash onto the table, Sillyd raised his head in fury.

[How dare you resort to violence against the heir of the Fairy King! Tcht!]

Swat!

He hit Kiran with the textbook he’d brought with him.

It happened to be a contracting textbook.

“Have you got something to say?”

[You! You! I cannot believe you’ve used violence against the Fairy Prince! Twice…!]

Swat!

[The fairies won’t let this slide…!]

Swat!

[I’m not afraid of a sore throat…!]

Swat!

[Leave me! Alone!]

Swat! Swat! Swat! Swat!

In no time, Kiran had collapsed in a dizzy stupor.

“Who on earth acts this cheeky? Are you really Sillyd’s offspring?”

Leo stared down at the unconscious Kiran, utterly perplexed.
